Create a Favicon

What is a favicon? It’s the tiny image seen next to web site’s addresses in most modern browsers. They also appear in tabs and in favorites lists. Their size is 16×16 pixels. Example:

It’s easy to create. Follow these simple steps and you too will soon have a custom favicon.

  • Download the Photoshop plugin that inserts “.ico” as a format when saving a file. I downloaded my plugin from this site.
  • Unzip the folder, and select the “IcoFormat” File.
  • Move this file to the following location: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop [version]\Plug-Ins
  • Open Photoshop. Create a new document with a transparent background, set the size to 32×32 or whichever size you feel more comfortable with. Remember the size is 16×16, so make sure your size is divisible by 16! (I’ll be using 32×32 canvas and then, I’ll reduce the size).

Make sure your setting are like these:

Settings

  • Draw your image. After you’re done reduce the size to 16×16. (Image-Image Size).

Size

  • After that, simply save your file. Under the box where you name it, select ICO (.ico, .cur)

Done. Now, want to learn how to put it on your site? Go here to find out.
